Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will I need to be in therapy?

Many factors go into determining the length of treatment. The initial presenting issue, your goals, your background, personality, and current life situation are all factors. It is not easy to give a definitive answer, but we will set goals early in therapy, which will serve as a gauge for your progress. I have worked with clients for several weeks, several months and for more than a year. Everyone’s reason for seeking therapy and their individual needs are vastly different, as well as an individual’s ability to process and move forward through sessions is unique to each client. We will “check-in” periodically to make sure we are still focused on the right goals, how far you have come and where we still need to go in order to reach your final goal.

Q: Some therapists seem to be more effective than others. Why is this?

Effective therapists incorporate evidence-based practices into their work, which research shows have the best outcomes for clients.  Successful therapists create a safe space and build a therapeutic alliance with their clients. These therapists have the ability to connect with and communicate on a deep level with their clients. They are also able to effectively collaborate with their clients using check ins to ensure the client sees that progress is being made.  Awareness, insight, thoughtful questioning, attention to details and humor are some of the qualities I bring to my practice, which have helped my clients to develop the psychological flexibility to face their challenges successfully.

Q: How will I know which therapist is right for me?

Some questions to ask yourself: Did you feel listened to? Did you feel the person was professional, respectful, and approachable? It is important to feel that you connect with your therapist, because without that connection you may not feel comfortable being open, honest, and candid about your particular issues.

Q: How do you know you’re getting quality therapy?

Effective therapists stay up to date on current research, they are dynamic and are able to form strong therapeutic alliances with their clients. They are able to empathize, identify with and communicate effectively with their clients.  These, among other attributes, are some of the qualities I offer my clients.

Q: How will I know this is working?

Initial goals will be set during the first few sessions of therapy, which we will track throughout your progress. I regularly touch base with my clients to ensure that we are still headed in the right direction, discuss growth and adjust, if necessary, as we start to see movement toward a resolution of your stated goals.

Finding the time and money to invest in your health and well-being can be difficult, but if you are at the point of contemplating therapy, I would encourage you to make yourself a priority. Solutions to the issues you are struggling with are priceless.
